Nobody dreams of an airport hotel — you just need one that works at 3am. İstanbul complicates the question by having two airports on opposite sides of a very large city: IST on the European far north, Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) deep on the Asian side. Book for the wrong one and you're two hours of traffic from your gate.
The golden rule
Never book an İstanbul hotel by name alone — check which airport it serves. IST-to-Sultanahmet is 40–60 minutes; SAW-to-Taksim can be 90 in traffic. If your flight is before 9am or lands after midnight, sleep on your airport's side of the water.
For IST (İstanbul Airport)
The airport itself has the simplest answer for pure transit: the YOTELAIR inside the terminal — including an airside wing you can use without passing immigration; a guest filmed the cabin-style rooms honestly.
On the European corridor toward the city, the Basın Ekspres strip is the classic compromise — airport in ~25 minutes, business-hotel comfort. For SAW (Sabiha Gökçen)
The Asian side's answer lives in Tuzla and the business districts: Radisson Blu Tuzla (8.8) turns the layover into a spa night — 4,000 m² of it, some rooms with private hammams — while Crowne Plaza Tuzla Viaport Marina (9.2) parks you beside a marina-and-theme-park complex. Closer to the TEM motorway, Park Inn Ataşehir (9.4) is the business-district sleeper hit.
The city-side compromise

What airport hotels won't tell you
Free shuttles run on schedules, not on your delay — check the last departure.
