!A Profound Betrayal of Trust — A Warning to Future Guests The most disappointing aspect of our stay at Kayakapi Premium Caves was not the accommodation itself, but the profound breach of trust associated with a tour we booked directly through the hotel. When guests arrange an excursion through their hotel, particularly one presenting itself as a premium establishment, they naturally assume that the recommended guides and businesses have been selected with some degree of care, integrity, and accountability. That assumption proved to be a very costly mistake. The tour took us to several establishments that, in retrospect, appeared to be classic tourist traps rather than genuinely worthwhile cultural experiences. Most disturbing was Göreme Onyx Jewellery, a jewelry shop where we purchased extremely expensive pieces represented to us as genuine zultanite, only to subsequently discover serious reasons to question the authenticity of the stones. We did not walk into these establishments randomly. We were taken there by a guide through a tour arranged by our own hotel. That distinction is fundamental. The hotel’s involvement created an implicit endorsement of the entire experience. It gave us a sense of security that we would never have extended to an unknown street vendor or an unsolicited commercial recommendation. I am not suggesting that the hotel necessarily knew about the questionable practices of these establishments. But that is precisely the point: a hotel that profits from arranging excursions has a responsibility to exercise reasonable care over the experiences it recommends to its guests. Whether the hotel was aware of what was happening or simply failed to scrutinize its commercial partners, the result for us was the same: we placed our trust in the hotel, and that trust was badly misplaced. What makes this experience particularly upsetting is that the financial loss, serious as it may be, is not even the most important issue.
